Well, it's pretty much the only source of legal ivory on Earth. That and if you want scientists to try de-extincting them, you've got to find them in the first place.

I'm pretty sure spring planting in 1934-1935 wasn't impossible.
As for carbon emissions, we should really talk to India and China about that.
