I saw The Northman, and that shit was fucking magnificent. Loved the story, the characters, the themes, the cinematography, the score, everything. Movie of the Year in my eyes so far for 2022. My highest possible recommendation. Very brutal, but never gratuitous. Slow paced, but never boring. Excellent action scenes, but never at the expense of character development or plot. All these things actually serve the film on its narrative arc and world-building, rather than just being there arbitrarily or to appeal to specific audience expectations. Emotionally gripping and beautiful to look at; several shots would make for great Metal album covers. An engaging commentary on the idea of fate, the nature of revenge, and how things that seemed simple can be distorted by perspective and time and context. A lot of mystical elements in here, but intentionally done in an ambiguous way so if you want there to be supernatural things taking place you can interpret it that way, or if you want everything abnormal to just be a dream or hallucination or whatnot, you can have it that way, as well. This film might not suit everyones tastes, but it suited mine very nicely! If you want a movie stepped in viking culture featuring a story focusing on a man filled with rage hell-bent on vengeance and what that might cost him, but one that's more of a slow-burn and thoughtful, then check this out.
