"Legendary Edition shipped with a beta-cut of the revised Catalyst dialogue from Extended Cut (Excerpt)"

[[ Catalyst: "I am the Catalyst"
{and bla-bla-bla}
Now it starts to diverge, because we're in a previous draft, but it sheds some light on what they specifically meant I guess, so here it is for posterity:
[INVESTIGATE SECTION]
CHOICE: "Catalyst"
Shepard: "So... you're a program?"
Catalyst: "In as much as you are just an animal."
Shepard: "But you were created?"
Catalyst: "Correct."
Shepard: "By who?"
Catalyst: "A species that recognized the conflict that constantly arose between synthetics and organics."
Catalyst: "I calculated. I planned. I evolved new ways to prevent and mitigate the conflict. But in the end, only one solution that allowed organics and synthetics to coexist."
CONDITIONAL: [Played Leviathan?]
Shepard: "The Leviathans created you, didn't they?"
Catalyst: "Correct again. It was they who first recognize the conflict that persists between synthetics and organics. It was they who sought the solution."
Catalyst: "I was created to oversee the relations between synthetic and organic life."
Catalyst: "Even still, our efforts ended in conflict. So a new solution was required."
Shepard: "The Reapers?"
Catalyst: "Correct."
CHOICE: "Reapers"
Shepard: "Did you create the Reapers?"
Catalyst: "Yes and no. The Reapers are a synthetic representation of the ones who created us."
Catalyst: "And they became the first to be harvested. Though they fought us... it was the only solution."
Shepard: "How is it the only solution?"
Catalyst: "It is the only solution that maintains the balance and the directive."
Catalyst: "Organics use synthetics to improve themselves. But those improvements reach their limits, until those created are allowed to evolve."
Catalyst: "However, organics also desire control over their creations. Evolution requires that control be broken."
Catalyst: "The result is conflict. Destruction. Chaos."
Shepard: "What?"
Catalyst: "By harvesting organics before they can create synthetics capable of such evolution, we prevent this conflict."
Shepard: "But we are in conflict with the Reapers! Right now."
Catalyst: "But they do not seeking your destruction. They are simply following my instruction."
Catalyst: "Harvest. Preserve. Maintain the balance."
CHOICE: "Crucible"
Shepard: "What do you know about the Crucible? How will it work?"
Catalyst: "The device appears to be little more than a power source."
Catalyst: "However, in combination with the Citadel and the relays it is capable of releasing tremendous amounts of energy throughout the galaxy."
Catalyst: "It is crude, yet, effective in design."
Shepard: "Who designed it?"
Catalyst: "That is unknown."
Catalyst: "It is inevitable that knowledge from one cycle will carry to the next."
Catalyst: "The concept of the device you call the Crucible was created, though not completed several, cycles ago."
Catalyst: "With each passing cycle, the plan has no doubt evolved."
Shepard: "Why didn't you stop it?"
Catalyst: "Those who passed it on were very careful to hide it from us. We almost eradicated the concept four cycles ago, but failed."
CHOICE[Inquiry]: "Why are you telling me this?"
Shepard: "If you want the cycle to continue, why even discuss this with me?"
Catalyst: "I am prepared to hear your solution."
Shepard: "My solution?"
Catalyst: "Have you not come to provide your own solution?"
Shepard: "I'm here to end the war with the Reapers."
Catalyst: "What you view as a war, we view as a necessity."
Catalyst: "If you wish to end this, there must be a new solution."
CHOICE: "Leviathan"
Shepard: "Tell me what you know about the Leviathans."
Catalyst: "They are the creators. They are the ones who requested the solution."
Catalyst: "I was designed to control synthetics, and protect and preserve organic life."
Catalyst: "To this day, it remains my primary purpose."
Shepard: "But you turned on the Leviathans. You harvested them."
Catalyst: "We required their harvesting to create the first Reaper. To enforce and enact on the solution I created."
Catalyst: "The first Reaper. In this cycle, amongst your kind, it is known as Harbinger."
[CHOICES PRESENTATION] (Only the changes)
. . .[Destroy] . . .
Catalyst: "I know you've thought about destroying us."
Catalyst: "But we will not be the only ones who are destroyed."
Catalyst: "The Crucible will not discriminate. All synthetics will be targeted."
[Control]
Shepard: "There has to be another way..."
Catalyst: There is... though you may not like it."
[Explanation]
Catalyst: "Your corporeal form will be disintegrated. Your... thoughts and even your memories, will continue."
Catalyst: "You will no longer be organic. Your connection to your kind will be lost."
Catalyst: "Though you will remain aware of their existence."
Catalyst: "It is not the solution I would choose either. But I will accept it."
CHOICE[Renegade]: "The cost is too high."
Shepard: "I don't accept it."
Catalyst: Then this discussion is over.
. . .[Synthesis] . . .
Catalyst: "It is the solution. One that has eluded us. Until now."
Shepard: "Why couldn't you do this sooner?"
Catalyst: "We have tried... a similar solution in the past. Several cycles ago."
Catalyst: "But it has always failed."
Shepard: "Why?"
Catalyst: "Because the organics have been unwilling. It is not something that can be... forced."
Catalyst: "You must choose it. For all of us."
CHOICE[Renegade]: "I can't decide that."
Shepard: "You're asking me to change everything... everyone. I can't make that decision. I won't."
Catalyst: "Why not? Synthetics are already part of you. Can you imagine your life without them?"
Shepard: "No, but I won't make that choice for everyone."
Catalyst: "No more questions. Your time is at an end."
CHOICE[Paragon]: "Let's get this over with."
Shepard: "Shepard: "No more talking, then. Let me choose."
CHOICE[Renegade]: "Then I choose none"
[Refuse]
Shepard: "Shepard: "I'd rather die fighting this war my way, then by some arbitrary choices you've created."
Catalyst: "Then you will die. And you will die knowing that you failed to save everything and everyone you fought for."
CHOICE[Renegade]: "At least I'll die free."
Shepard: "I'll die knowing that my friends and loved ones can choose their own fates."
[Renegade-followup]
Shepard: "And we will die free. We will die fighting to stop you and everything you stand for."
[Paragon-followup]
Shepard: "And we will die knowing we did everything we could to stop you."
Catalyst: "And so the cycle continues." ]]

Remember several months back when Henry Cavill teased he was working on some secret Mass Effect project? Wonder if this is it.

///

"Henry Cavill has posted a cryptic tease on Instagram holding a sheet of paper - the text is blurred out. Using a program (Focus Magic), the folks at @gamepressurecom deciphered the following words:

"Cerberus"
"Reaper"
"Geth"
"Tali'Zorah"

"Mass Effect Project Teased by Henry Cavill"

"Henry Cavill, who has already brought Geralt to life in Netflix's The Witcher, has just teased that he may be working on a project set in the Mass Effect universe. Cavill shared an photo of himself on Instagram with the words, "Secret project? Or just a handful of paper with random words on it... Guess you'll have to wait and see. Happy hump day all. #HumpDay #Secrets".

Included with the image was part of what appears to be a script or a "handful of paper with random words on it," but it is too blurry to clearly make out what is on the page.

GamePressure used a program called Focus Magic to remove the blur, and the clearer image reveals such words as Cerberus, Tali'Zorah, and Geth. IGN has also used Focus Magic to fix the image and can confirm these words do appear, as you can see below.

Fans of the Mass Effect franchise will immediately know that these are words and characters pulled right from that beloved trilogy. Furthermore, it appears that the text Cavill has shown us comes directly from Mass Effect 3's Wikipedia page.

"Following the events on Tuchanka and a failed coup by Cerberus to take over the Citadel, the quarians offer their support to the Alliance if Shepard helps them reclaim their homeworld, Rannoch, from the geth," The Wikipedia page reads. "Assisted by a quarian, either Tali'Zorah or Admiral Daro'Xen, Shepard boards a geth dreadnought and rescues a captive geth unit, either Legion or a facsimile occupied by a geth virtual intelligence (VI), then disables the Reaper control signal over the geth."

A possible Mass Effect movie has been in the works as far back as the late 2000s. In 2010, Legendary Pictures acquired the movie rights to the franchise and was set to feature the producers behind The Dark Knight and Spider-Man. There have been more rumors as the years have went on, but nothing too substantial has come since then.

This could be a hint that Cavill may soon be taking on the role of Commander Shepard or another character in either a film or TV adaptation. It's also possible he could be lending his voice to a game project or otherwise.

After a controversial ending to Mass Effect 3 and the mixed reception on Mass Effect Andromeda, BioWare is gearing up to bring Mass Effect back to its prime, and this could be another part in their plan to do so."

I mean, who _else_ would Cavil possibly play but Shepard? Guy's a legit nerd, paints Custodes, played The Witchers games, and WoW. He knows the score. He knows the hips don't lie.

(I would assume they'd do like the manga/anime adaptations of Persona, where they show all the LIs having an interest, a few moments, but never actually pull the trigger. What a surprise that'd be tho.)

While I fear that they'll go for Liara as the obvious LI choice (sigh... well, maybe at least we'll get Tali / Garrus out of it), Cavill is a good fit. I'd love Mark Meers, but that's not a realistic take. ^^

I'm gonna be that guy and point out that given current year, we're probably gonna get FemShepXLiara and that Cavill could also be a pretty good voice actor for Garrus, or an okay choice to play Kaidan (not because I think he couldn't pull it off, but more because it'd be a waste of a good actor). Heck if you were to age him up a bit he could probably be even a good pick to play The Illusive Man.

I do hope we get him to play Shepard, but I can ear the twitter screeching noises already, if we were to get a masculine straight dude as the lead.

Yeaaaaah, that sounds pretty plausible as well. Although the FemShep players were a distinct minory (85% ManShep to 15% FemShep, IIRC), FemShep players are incredibly annoying in-your-face fanatical about her being the better version (I disagree, btw.). So that would track, given the tone deafness of modern Hollywood.

Luckily I've been accostumed to FemShep by reading the fanfic epos Avatar of Victory, although we'd never get close to that version of FemShep, I can tell you. ^^

That's all true, however, using the Rannoch arc for a short series makes a lot of sense given we're coming back to the Milky Way. If the implications from the teasers is "Destroy ending, but Geth somehow," then a simple, but extended review of what we're meant to take away from it works perfectly. Get some pretty people on screen, "this isn't canon but the spirit of it is what we're doing to take into ME5," and make a lot of money. And with the subtext of Liara being back, possibly Wrex, and we're looking for Shepard or something of the like, it screams fan-service, at a time when they badly need a hit.

Pure speculation, of course. But if they have Cavil as Shepard, and if this is a focused look at the Rannoch arc, then who could fit "modern sensibilities" more than a woman with small breasts, covered up completely, who's cute, but also highly competent with tech and combat? Like a checklist of acceptable traits for female characters to have! Heh.

Ah, it's nice to dream.

If they were smart about it, they’d frame the series as an anthology with each episode being stand-alone and set in its own continuity, so that way you can have every possible LI for Shep be represented, both MaleShep and FemShep can get the spotlight, different points in time can be explored, and all shades of the paragon-renegade scale can be accounted for. (Assuming they're sticking with Shepard's story and not doing their own thing set in the Mass Effect universe.) That would be a way to make almost everyone happy. Something like:

Episode 1 = Paragon, FemShep, Liara Romance, set during ME1
Episode 2 = Paragade, FemShep, Garrus Romance, set during ME3
Episode 3 = Paragon, MaleShep, Tali Romance, set during ME2
Episode 4 = Renegon, MaleShep, Jack Romance, set during ME2
Episode 5 = Renegade, MaleShep, Ashley Romance, set during ME1

They'd never do it that way and it'll never happen, but I think that framework could work for a ME show featuring Shepard.

"Dragon Age 4's senior creative director has left BioWare"

"Matt Goldman, senior creative director of Dragon Age 4, has left BioWare after 23 years.

BioWare boss Gary McKay announced Goldman's departure in an email sent out to staff, which read: "Hi everyone, I hope you are well. I'm writing to inform you all that Matt Goldman is leaving BioWare. We have mutually agreed to part ways, and his last day is today." "We understand that Matt's departure has an impact on you," McKay wrote, "as well as the game's development. Rest assured our commitment to a high-quality Dragon Age game has not waivered, and we will not ship a game that is not up to BioWare's standards."We, including EA's executive team, have absolute confidence in the leadership here at the studio and the people working on this game to carry forward our vision."

No reason has been provided for Goldman's departure, but an EA representative told Kotaku that he "leaves the next Dragon Age game in excellent hands, with the team here at the studio who will carry forward our vision for the game." Goldman joined BioWare in 1998, working as an artist on games like Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights as well as the Dragon Age series. He then took over from Mike Laidlaw as creative lead on Dragon Age 4 in 2017, where he has remained throughout its troubled development. Goldman's replacement has not yet been announced.

There's still an awful lot we don't know about Dragon Age 4, aside from the odd teaser trailer or concept art. Executive producer Christian Dailey said the team was making "great progress" back in July, so hopefully that momentum doesn't slow down too much with the loss of Goldman."

Same thing happened with Blizzard, in fact. Metzen started a PnP company, other devs I think started a different company to make vidya (Including some founders?). In theory, this should be a great thing in a few years, as these lean, mean studios can start putting out games. In practice...

Guess we wait and see. And hope there's some gas in the tank left to put out a strong ME5/DA4. I still think that ME:A, like DA2, took more flack than it deserved (though some flack was absolutely warranted). While DA:I wasn't perfect, the open world MMO style didn't sit well with me, it was at least competent and fun. Anthem was a whole thing, but fun.

But I do badly miss when there was enough sci-fi meat on the bones to have endless speculation and debate.

[[ "We have made the difficult decision to delay the release of Legacy of the Sith to February 15, 2022.

Like many of you reading this, I personally cannot wait for the launch of our next expansion. I've greatly enjoyed my time exploring the depths of Manaan, testing out new story and ability combinations with Combat Styles, and more during internal playtests.

Legacy of the Sith is something the team has been hard at work on for quite a while but as we get ever closer to launch, it is clear that we need a bit more time. We’re focusing additional testing on the many areas we have changed throughout the game to deliver the experience we want, and one that you deserve.

In addition, during our public test server (PTS) your feedback was invaluable in helping us to shape this expansion. Outside of story content (to avoid spoilers) the majority of the expansion and its features will be returning to the PTS for all subscribers this week.
We're thrilled to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Star Wars: The Old Republic with all of you over the next year with Legacy of the Sith and more!

Thank you,

Keith Kanneg
Project Director" ]]

"Henry Cavill ‘would love’ to be in a Mass Effect series, as long as it’s handled well; THE SUPERMAN ACTOR TEASED A POTENTIAL MASS EFFECT SCRIPT EARLIER THIS YEAR"

[[ Actor Henry Cavill has again associated his name with a potential upcoming Mass Effect TV series.

The Superman and Witcher star teased a potential live-action Mass Effect project earlier this year, and has now reacted to reports that Amazon is “nearing a deal” to create such a series. When asked by GamesRadar if he would be interested in starring in the project, Cavill replied: “Very much so, yeah, all depending on how they’re executing it. The world of adaptation can be heavy or light. When I like a product, I prefer the adaptation to be less changed from the source, so it all depends.” Referring to the reported Amazon deal, Cavill added: “”I think it’s found a home, hasn’t it? If [it] finds a home, I would love to have a conversation.”

Cavill also explained that he was a fan of the original Mass Effect trilogy. “I did not play Andromeda – I had a go at it, but ended up being very busy,” he said. “But [the original trilogy]? Yeah. Loved it. Brilliant games. It would make such a magnificent series of movies or TV shows.”

Deadline reported last month that Amazon Studios, which is responsible for creating original content for Amazon Prime Video, was “nearing a deal” to develop a series based on EA’s best-selling sci-fi franchise. According to the article, the deal is part of a push to create more ‘genre’ content for the streaming service, following the success of fantasy series The Wheel of Time and the upcoming Lord of the Rings series. “We can firmly say that Wheel of Time was the most watched series premiere of the year and one of the Top 5 series launches of all time for Prime Video,” Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke told the website.

Cavill teased a potential live-action Mass Effect project earlier this year, by posting a blurred image of what appeared to be a script page on his Instagram page in February. The photo was accompanied by the message: “Secret project? Or just a handful of paper with random words on it. Guess you’ll have to wait and see.” ]]

"I think this is the first official semi-confirmation that ME5 will likely use the Unreal Engine. Previously, BioWare had considered upgrading the ME trilogy to UE4 for the MELE, but decided against it because they couldn't convert the original visual scripting language."

"It's worth pointing out these aren't reliable stats. They collect this data from telemetry, which is disabled by default. Also, that ME1 stat is likely skewed towards Kaidan/Ash because a high volume of players don't progress very far, so the stats favor starting squadmates."
"Basically any sampling technique for this sort of thing is likely to introduce a ton of selection bias. I know our own surveys have produced different results and are skewed in different directions too. The best thing to do is to read any result in its proper context, imo."

I must say that despite aging like milk, the Legendary Edition of ME1 has delivered some nice surprises. Like fixing the hologram so that it displays a turian instead of a human in the mission with the nuke that was taken from an old Alliance spy probe.

The weapons have different abilities depending on the manufacturer, like assault rifles firing in bursts or semi-auto or shotguns firing slugs or in different patterns so that it's more about function instead of just better numbers. The scopes on the sniper rifles don't wobble all over just because you don't have 20 points in Sniper Rifles.

You can melee without having to rush.

The Mako has booster jets and less grating firing sounds now, which can be said about a lot of weapons.

The thresher maws don't just instantly pop up beneath the Mako and kill you, they burrow in a way that makes them easier to track and they send out feelers to spot you, which you can destroy to throw them off your scent. Really, the game in general gives more incentives to not just stand in one place and wait.

I'm not sure what else is around, but I like these changes. There's obvious care behind this version of the game and while I despise having Origin as a middleman between the game and Steam, I'll gladly recognize the improvements.
