Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if GW wants the Imperium to score a lot of early victories in this new edition to build up sales and hype and then have the other factions derail the Imperium's victory train later on. Can't upset the balance of power too much. They got models and codexes to sell.
My youth was like that, only I didn't do my homework and just played D2/WC3. Loved the manuals, the art, the lore. Even got a DnD box for D2 that I had no idea how to play, but read over and over for the fantasy. I'm sure nostalgia doesn't hold up quite so well today, but still, some very fond memories there.
Alternatively, GW could frame the battles in a way that the Imperium's fucked no matter what, but it's a matter of how fucked they get.

Prettttttty much. They can set the table, cook the meal, but once you get a fork in it, ash and blandness. Characters speaking, literally, entirely in cliches, meaningless plot beats, they have such strong IPs and characters, but the executions are just bland. Newest WoW expac, Sylvannas becomes the Warchief right at the start, since Vol'Jin had just become it and trolls can never be allowed to have a victory last. She gets an interesting, fun storyline in one of the starting zones, it gives her new depth, motivations, and then she's basically silent 100% since then. And that was about a year ago, I think the third major content patch is due soon, then the next expac should be announced.
