Re: Tali'Thread vas Clan Zorah nar BSN 6.0
So I just discovered that Amazon Video has a "The Great Courses" channel you can subscribe to for like $10 a month. It's basically full college lecture series on all kinds of subjects. My inner nerd is quite happy.

Yeah I've seen that been advertised on some youtube channels I watch once in a while. Stuff like Alternate History Hub.
Re: Tali'Thread vas Clan Zorah nar BSN 6.0
With the realization that my mother and father were younger than I am now when they married and conceived me, and that was average for the time, the current divorce rate makes far more sense.

Another thing about that divorce rate stat is that the highest predictor of divorce is whether the divorcee has been married before. Of divorces only about 30% are breakups of first marriages and the other 60-70% are breakups of 2nd+ marriages. Which probably just means that 30ish% of the population aren't wired to maintain long term monogamous relationships and can't come to terms with it.

Which is further affected by the significantly lower rate of marriage among young adults now, as a result of ongoing economic depression and watching families dissolve.
If 30% of all divorces per year are from first time marriages, then the failure rate for first time marriages is not necessarily 30%. If every single first time marriage ends in 20 years, it's not reflected in that statistic. Presumably, that 30% of people who aren't wired to maintain long term monogamous relationships are going to keep trying at it, but I can't seem to find the actual breakdown of -who- gets married each year. Though I strongly suspect that the rate is being buoyed by the elderly.
And how is the net divorce rate calculated? Presumably you'd have to wait out the lifetime of whichever partner dies first to verify, and that's going to be grossly skewed.
I've seen an infograph floating around that claims to have stats on interracial marriage rates. Apparently, of all the major pairings, white man/black woman is 44% more likely to make it than the average. Which makes sense, in that you really gotta want each other to put up with the bullshit you'll get.
Edit: That reads a lot more negative than I meant. I think the idea of a strong union between two, or more, people is a beautiful thing. I don't believe it should be culturally expected as something relationships must result in, or that the government should be involved in any capacity.
Re: Tali'Thread vas Clan Zorah nar BSN 6.0
I think its more of people jumping into shit they aren't ready for.
Re: Tali'Thread vas Clan Zorah nar BSN 6.0
I think there's a cultural element that people don't understand what marriage is for anymore as well.
Marriage is yet another victim of "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" thinking. Humans are meant to operate in teams, be that unit marriages, families, villages or whatever. The hyper focus on the individual and individual happiness has meant that many have forgotten how to surrender self into some higher unit of mutual cooperation. I think it's one of the principal sicknesses of Western culture really.
[/end bad philosophizing]
Also, there is an income element. Namely, the poorer the couple, the more likely they will get divorced.

Marriage as an expectation is nuts, in my opinion. People have it ingrained in their heads that marriage is the "end goal happy ending," when it's actually the start of doing everything on hard mode, because now you're legally tied to another person. Then you toss in kids and it all gets messy.
I think there are more effective and meaningful ways to be with someone and almost none of them involve putting a metal band on someone else's body. Almost none...
Re: Tali'Thread vas Clan Zorah nar BSN 6.0
It's like Raga said, the purpose has been muddled. I say it's in no small part because of the intentional, and rapid, deconstruction of cultural norms in the last decade or so, along with everything else.
Unless there are changes to the legal burdens getting a recognized union includes, I cannot imagine we'll ever return to the old levels, nuclear family, straying eyes are to be punished, married for life. I also don't think we'll descend in a 24/7 bacchanal, everyone raises everyone's children, relationships form and break as whims dictate. If I had to guess, I'd say the new equilibrium will take a few decades to sort itself out, as the puritans on the left and right pass control back and forth, assuming no catastrophic economic changes. But the genie's out of the bottle, so we'll settle in a paradigm that's mercurial, but has stages of commitment just shy of tying the knot. For the peasants anyway, the nobility will do their own thing. And that's Vol's crystal ball insight for the day.
Also the tall, handsome, strong, and witty men of America will form harems of cute people and lord over them like a benevolent god.

It all starts with one. Just got to get that one.

there's a number of factors at play explaining the current divorce rates.
--rushing into marriage without really getting to know the person first
--rushing into marriage lacking the emotional maturity to handle it
--not ready for the commitment
--too much focus on work, not enough at home
--the marriage becomes too routine
--begin taking their partner for granted
--rising infidelity rates
--huge debts
--poor economy
--poor housing market
--betrayed trust
--poor communication in the relationship
--don't really know how to compromise/forgive in a relationship
--unreasonably high or inaccurate expectations
--having kids (biological or adopted) when they cannot afford it/aren't emotionally ready for it
--don't know how to plan ahead/manage an responsible lifestyle
--priorities/circumstances changing suddenly and they are unable to adapt
--getting married to someone they knew was bad for them but did it anyway out of stubbornness, desperation, loneliness, fear, or spite
--more people just quitting the moment they have disagreement, instead of trying to see if they can work it out after both parties have calmed down

I believe marriage is an important societal and familial institution and will continue to remain so in the century ahead, but I agree wholeheartedly that there's way too much expectation & pressure, and that the government should get its claws out of it altogether. To say nothing of the insane costs of getting married. My best friend and one of my sisters are both getting married later this year, and holy shit, those expenses are rediculous.

I see that a lot, unfortunately. Rarely ends well.

Vehemently disagree with much of that, but I'll end it there because I have no desire to get into a philosophical debate.
I'm more than happy to agree to disagree.

Well, I think that's the final nail in this particular coffin for me.
But I'll wait for some slightly less obviously biased opinion. Can't say I consider trustworthy a big game reviewer that lists alot of potentially very annoying problems and still gives the title an 8/10. And also forgets to mention or aknowledge all the features cut from the previous games, or the fact that is the Dawn of War game at the hightest price AND with the lowest content at launch... 3 factions, one short campaign and one multiplayer mode...
Sigh.

Yeah, let's hear from a few others before you slam the hammer on that nail.

Re: Tali'Thread vas Clan Zorah nar BSN 6.0
Like I said, I'll wait abit longer: I can forgive or justify alot of the cut features, and the different artstyle, and the different gameplay. But I'm not going to pay 60+ euros for 3 factions, a glorified tutorial and one game mode with an handful of map. Oh, and the promise they'll eventually add more. If that's really the case, I'll just keep playing the old games, and hope this one flops and they learn their lesson.

Re: Tali'Thread vas Clan Zorah nar BSN 6.0
In some fabulous news, a music project I've been working on for 3 to 4 months, which has been the reason why I haven't socialized much or played really far into Andromeda, has become corrupted and I can no longer view any of my work. I saved a backup, but that file was corrupted as well. Tried to restore my system to an earlier version, but am unable to. UGH!
The silver lining? I made a PDF of the score a week ago to show the director and made a second copy for myself. Now I have a week to input about 3 months of work into a notation file from a score that's about a week old.
I want to know what the lesson here is. I keep an updated backup, but if the file I back up is corrupted is does no good. How should I back up files in the future to prevent a corrupted file from ruining how I back up my work?

I had it on a thumb drive. My program crashed and I moved my latest save to the back up. When I opened up the original the program said file was corrupted. Looked at the original file and it was 0KB. Looked at the back up and it was also 0KB.
Re: Tali'Thread vas Clan Zorah nar BSN 6.0
So you created the backup after it crashed?

Re: Tali'Thread vas Clan Zorah nar BSN 6.0
What happens sometime is the program will stop working and close. When I reopen the program it would say "program forced closed, do you want to open the latest saved program?" It will open the latest save and I redo all the changes I made. Every 15 to 30 mins or x amount of work I would update the back up. But If the program doesn't open then I have to restart the comp and I'll use the back up save, since the BU would be the latest. So I did that, but I guess the file got corrupted and then I made the back up.
Re: Tali'Thread vas Clan Zorah nar BSN 6.0
Shit. Well, I'd recommend trying to open the files in a different program, in case the issue was the software you were using, but if the files are showing up as 0KB, that's pretty definite.
The lesson here is like rotating save files in a game. You keep some number of backups, then cycle through them as you overwrite, so that whatever corrupted the saves you have probably won't affect them all.
