Knocked off some more items off my watch list.
Sisu was a ton of fun. A love letter to old-school action movies. Its simple and over-the-top, but in the best way possible. Unapologetic and proud of it. While our protag lacks the graceful, artful style of a John Wick, he makes up for it in hard-core brutality and raw grit. Both John Wick and this guy are the living embodiments of unyielding determination. Lovely cinematography, very atmospheric, great character acting with minimalist dialogue, and the Finnish countryside is a perfect backdrop for this story. Highly recommended if its still playing in your local theater; I caught the last showing at mine last week.
Speaking of John Wick, I had the fortuitous opportunity to see 4 again thanks to a friend and some unexpected free time last week, and as much as I enjoyed the film the first time, I enjoyed even more the second. (Funny how some films do that, eh?) I'd bump it up my JW rankings for sure.
In the Tall Grass came out on Netflix in 2019, but I just got around to it this week, and I liked it a lot. A lot more Lovecraftian Horror than I was expecting. Patrick Wilson does such a good job in this; he's under appreciated as an actor, if you ask me.
I planned on seeing Guardians of the Galaxy 3 today, but my busy schedule ruined that idea, so that will have to wait for another time. But I did manage to catch a show of Renfield, which was pretty fun, though not without its flaws. It's a blast whenever Cage is on screen, hamming it up as Dracula, not so much when the story delves away from that. Most of the jokes do land, but the film could have explored its characters more more and mined out some more emotional drama. As a horror-comedy the tone is balanced pretty well, though there are moments they could have gone both more hog-wild and more serious. But hats off to Shohreh Aghdashloo playing a ruthless crime family matriarch; and there's a kill scene here that's a homage to the X-Ray moves from the recent Mortal Kombat games that was very well done.
