It's kind of a shame it's mentioned in passing but I'll take that over never mentioned at all.

I still kind of hope that we get a little bit of the Republic Commando books stuff bleeding through soon, I'd love it.
As much as I love the Bad Batch I still miss my boys.

Got back from seeing John Wick 4. A ton of fun, an absolute must see if you're a fan of this series or action movies in general. But even with me having just seen it and the hype wave still carrying me, I don't think this was the strongest entry in the franchise. My personal list as of right now would be: 3, 1, 2, 4.

This movie surprised me in various ways in regards to the direction it took, narratively speaking. A lot of my fan theories were wrong.

It was a lot funnier than I was expecting, several of the action bits are made to be comical in just how much over-the-top punishment folks suffer; you could easily add in some Looney Toon sound effects and it wouldn't be amiss, but it doesn't shatter the tone, so its balanced well.

Superb choreography and cinematography, as always.

We go all over the world, and each location is eye-catching and unique and helps differentiate the carnage.

A lot of new characters introduced in this film, and all of them are great in one way or another. The returning ones were excellent as always.

The movie does feel a little over-long and over-indulgent in places, but its juggling a lot of material, both old and new, so I can understand why.

John dies at the end of this. He bleeds out from his wounds and is buried next to his wife. Wasn't expecting that. Like, I figure John would die at the end of this story, but I didn't think it'd happen here, or in the manner in which it did. This movie had a very "final" feel to it throughout, and this is why. I thought we were going to get a John Wick 5, but I guess I was wrong. This is the end, with Keanu Reeves anyway. The setting is rich enough you could tell more stories in it.

Charon is killed, which hits extra hard given that Lance died recently.

The NY Continental is destroyed in the beginning, but is set to be rebuilt by the end.

John goes back to the Elder/The One Who Sits Above the Table to get his wedding ring back. The Elder from JW3 is dead and replaced by a new guy offscreen, and John just kills him without any fuss. I was kinda hoping the Elder was going to be the "final boss" of this story, so that was a little disappointing.

John doesn't go to war against all the members of the High Table, just the latest person to hold the rank of Marquis de Gramont, a guy appointed and empowered by the Table to be their supreme agent and represents their interests and authority, and using an old rule to challenge him to a duel (though being the coward that he is, using one of john's old friends, an assassin named Caine, to stand in for him as his proxy, using his daughter as leverage), the prize being his total freedom and forgiveness. He gets it, and without killing his friend, but at the cost of his life.

Aye, better something than nothing. We're getting more than I ever thought we would. This season seems to be "how much old EU lore bits can we put in here before the higher ups notice and get upset?"

While I really like this aspect of the amnesty program being a filler episode, I do have a little bit of a bug bear when it comes to the plot point of the New Republic essentially pissing away Imperial Tech because it's Imperial. And the disbanding of the Rebel Alliance Fleet.
Seems really fucking stupid to piss away so much good material.
Like in the old EU they re-used Imperial stuff. They took Star Destroyers and slapped a massive New Republic symbol on it to show it was theirs, not pull them all apart (and not on the sodding homeworld, like why do THAT when there are shipyards and actual scrapyard planets like Nar Shaddaa?!?).

Disney's New Republic: lasted 30 years. Easily defeated and cowed into submission. Leia had to break away and build her own military.

Old EU New Republic: lasted at least 130 years (it was finally overthrown by the Fel Dynasty and Darth Krayt's One Sith cult, but that victory only lasted a few years at most before they were overthrown in turn and replaced by the Galactic Federation Triumvirate) and it endured countless massive attacks and invasions during that time. Never surrendered, even when kicked off of Coruscant and was a government-in-exile.

This is why you maintain a strong military in a galaxy beset by conquest-happy alien empires and evil space wizards!

Saw John Wick 4 Saturday. Probably the best action movie I've seen in the last five years, with some incredibly set-pieces. Gets the spot as the second best John Wick movie, since I found the story of 2 and 3 to be terrible.

Saw a few more films on my to-watch list.

The new Mario Bros. movie is a fun adventure flick, with excellent and colorful animation, exciting action, a wonderful soundtrack (the actual score, not the modern licensed songs), mostly good voice acting, tons of easter eggs/references, and an appeal to nostalgia that feels more like a joyful celebration of childhood instead of a cynical/lazy/soulless cash grab and member berry pandering.
However, it does have issues, some of which are: The humor is very hit and miss. Separating Mario and Luigi for so long was a big mistake in my opinion; they have great chemistry together and that gets severely underutlized because of it. The movie feels like 20 minutes of material was chopped out in the editing room, so the plot and characters arcs are very thin, so it's definitely banking on spectacle and your pre-existing love of the source material to make up the difference. Could have used more connective tissue to bind the set pieces together.
The stand out performance is Jack Black who's having a blast playing Bowser, making him both menacing and amusing in equal measure; he alone justifies watching this film. Charlie Day is great as Luigi, but he doesn't get much screen-time. Chris Pratt wasn't my first choice for Mario, but his voice does grow on you fairly quickly. The most distracting performances were Fred Armisen's Cranky Kong and Seth Rogen's Donkey Kong; their voices didn't really fit the characters at all in my opinion. Keegan-Michael Key knocks it out of the park with Toad. Anya Taylor-Joy is good as Peach, though they made Peach more like Daisy than Peach. Charles Martinet gets a couple small roles in here, and he's always great.

Creed 3 is a superb way to wrap up the story of Adonis Creed, and a strong directorial debut for Michael B. Jordan. While I think Creed 1 and 2 are better films, this one is still pretty damn good. Acting is great, the fights are fantastic(and very anime-inspired), the story has good pacing and always keeps you invested, with lots of emotional beats that hit you hard. While you do miss Rocky, you understand why he's not here, as Adonis' journey as a character required him stepping out from the shadow of both Rocky and Apollo, being his own man, forging his own legacy.

65 was a colossal disappointment. Don't waste your time or your money on this stinker. A brilliant concept utterly wasted.
